At least you noticed this today! I remember a few others back when the DA GM's came out, put 15K ob 5w's behind there new 01 and 02 trucks, and had issues with bottoming out etc. But they were under gcwr! so that is all that counted per say.
As you are noting, trailer tow capacities are a bogus number, at the end of the day, it is PAYLOAD, PAYLOAD and PAYLOAD that will decide the max trailer you can tow!
So if you want to tow something bigger than 9K lbs, get a ball mount where you only have 10-15% HW, or go to a bigger chassis truck! pretty plain and simple.
Yes, you did the math VERY CORRECT! I've been showing the same thing for over 10 yrs on here!
