New bathroom vent and fan

We had one serious hailstorm last summer and my old campers roof took a real beating. It happened right after my wife and I moved and my attentions and energy were directed elsewhere. When I started looking at my camper, I noticed the plastic escape hatch, reefer vent, ac cover fantastic lid and bathroom plastic vent cover were damaged with the plastic bath vent completely annihilated. Luckily the escape hatch inside snap on cover was installed and it soaked up a lot of water and saved the mattress from a soaking. Anyhow, I gorilla taped the cracked pieces to get by and put a plywood cover over the bath vent and have actually camped several times since. I want to completely replace the bath unit, because the fan blades were shot any how.
I am looking for an inexpensive replacement for the complete unit. Suggestions?
It is the original and is the standard size... 14 x 14.
Next project coming up will be to replace some cracked plumbing. During move , I had to store camper in a storage lot and was not able to keep heated and I think you guys know what happened.
  • I'd recommend one of those maxxaire type of hoods where the fan is aimed down behind the vent opening and can be used in the rain, etc.

  • Your story sounds almost identical to ours when we owned our Springdale camper. About the 7th year of ownership, hail pelted the TT. 3 roof vent covers were beaten out. I duck taped them to create a cover. One over the bed broke out completely, mattress was soaked through and through.

At the same time, the hail broke out the very brittle and frail fan blades in the vent in the bathroom. When I touched one of the remaining blades, it just crumbled.

I took the lazy route and took it to a nearby dealer and they replaced all 3 vent covers with new ones. They also could not match the actual fan blade, so they just put in a whole new motor with a new fan blade. It worked great!

We also had them install air-maxx style covers over the roof vents in the event we'd ever get hit with hail again. We kept the camper another year and a half, almost 2 years after then, and finally traded for new one. First thing I had the dealer do, before we even hitched to the truck that very first time, was to put covers over all the vents. Best thing we could have done!

Actually, the cost was surprising reasonable for the entire repair of fan, covers, and hoods, parts, labor and everything. As I remember, labor and everything was just around $200. I would have spent $200 in fuel lone just driving around trying to find that fan replacement! I thought I got a good deal. I'd do it again that way if it happened again.

If you're going to fix it yourself, and unable to find matching parts from a good RV dealer, you're next best option is surfing the Internet, or visiting RV salvage yards.

EDIT: As Bumpy also said above, the Max Air vent covers is a good alternate replacement. You can install those yourself, if you've got the time!
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Looking to go cheap on this replacement. Eventually gonna get new covers for each item, but wanna replace the whole unit in bath for little money.
  • Basic powered vent fairly inexpensive, you can replace just the lid identifying hinge style, also just the fan blade-however

Ebay 14" roof vent note: doesnt include inside trim 'garnish' ring. If your inside trim ring is good and fits-under $20. Better Jensen with trim-just shop around.

I recently had an almost new lid get cracked right down the middle in a gust of wind. Getting dark and about an hour before it started raining. Im out there with trash bags and duct tape... Good luck

This guy gets me. That first one will work!
  • Well...maybe, better than a piece of plywood though, at least let in more light I would think, probably easier to open too.

Can always upgrade or change out the fan portion to like the Vortex portscanner linked or other.
