New Battery - No Power

I have a 2011 Forest River Wildwood 30KQBSS. I recently had to change to a new Battery. Ever since changing the battery, the TT will not run off of battery power, and the Slide's will not extend. The strange thing, is that if I unhook the battery, and then reconnect once arriving at the campsite, the slides will then extend. Also - When I plug in to Shore Power, the "whirring" sound from the fuse box that usually means the battery is being charged, will only come on for about 5 seconds, and then shut off. It seems like the TT is not picking up any power from the Battery, unless I disconnect it, and reconnect it upon each use. This is my first TT, so I am real confused on what I might have did wrong when I changed to a new Battery.

  • As others have said, have battery tested and make sure it is connected properly.

If problem still exists, it could be one of these. Probably, located under the trailer, near a junction box, where positive battery cable connects to the trailer.

These auto reset breakers come in various (20,30,40, etc) amperage, and, are available at most auto parts stores.
  • Thanks for all the great replies everyone! I am headed out this evening, and will give these suggestions a shot. Happy Camping!!
  • Reversed polarity at the battery, that luckily has a auto reset breaker in-line… at least until it burns up…

disconnect the battery and make sure the wire bolted to the frame goes to the negative - battery post…
then hope the new battery isn’t damaged…
  • Take rig into any tire, auto parts house - have them disconnect battery, test it, and reconnect - it's free and should take some of the mystery out of issue.

I also suppose the jacks will run in the opposite direction if wired in REVERSE ORDER. I have never seen that myself but think I have read some reports to this.

Hopefully all the fuses have blown and protected your brand new battery from destroying itself. If not you may be buying another expensive battery...

Please check the terminals of the battery as you may have them reversed.

This is what I always mentally do when connecting batteries.

Find the word "NEG" or the symbol "-" marked on the 12VDC batter case. Make sure this battery cable goes to the frame ground connection that should be very close to the battery.

If it has been connected in REVERSE POLARITY you need to find two fuses in the 12VDc POWER DISTRIBUTION PANEL that is marked "REVERSE POLARITY" There may also be an IN-LINE fuse very close to the battery terminals as well.. First be sure the cables are on the correct terminals of the battery and then replace the blown fuses described above...

Let us know what you find out...

Once you get it hooked up correctly I would use some RED fingernail polish and and mark the POSITIVE cables near the battery terminal.

It is confusing to go by the color of battery cables as if RED and BLACK colors are used the BLACK goes to the negative terminal and the RED goes to the positive terminal. If WHITE and BLACK color cables are used then WHITE goes to the negative terminal and the BLACK goes to the positive terminal. Any added fuse blocks etc usually all go to the marked positive terminal..

ALot of us have crossed the terminals as it is so easy to do. One thing that happens is the manf of the same battery will relocate the terminals on their battery to the other side and of course you will most likely hook up like the battery was positioned before. Just takes one little spark to blow the fuses...
