New Camper + Question on towing toys

Hey all,

Been a bit but my wife and have pulled the trigger on a new truck camper. We owned one in 2012, didn't have toys then sold it but we do now. My truck is a 2009 F350 Crew Cab V10 (3800lb payload). The camper (1994 dry, so 2800 wet) we are buying will need a 24" hitch extension to tow our 2013 Polaris RZR-4 900.

The RZR weighs in at about 1300lbs, the trailer I pull it on is an open utility trailer 7'x14' with a 3500lb GVWR. I have been told by multiple people to just pick up a reese or titan 24" hitch extension and go play.

I think the Torklift Superhitch is way over kill for what we would be using it for. Thoughts?
  • I'll need to get a measurement, you guys are right may not need a 24" extension. The camper is being delivered in July so I should know more in a bit. Have a little bit of time to get the truck set up.

    Thanks for the advice.

I have pretty close to the same thing..My camper is 9.6" long on a long bed F-350 and I have a Yamaha Rhino and an ATV trailer..My 18" receiver comes almost even with the bumper on my lance. My currant hitch extension is rated 350/3500 which is more than enough if I load the Rhino correctly.. Reese offers a solid bar 18" I should have bought instead with 400/4000 rating..I probably will still get it so not to worry about the hitch weight at all.

As you already know,it is pretty easy to gauge hitch weight as you pull your UTV on the trailer as it bucks a little as you go onto the trailer.

Super hitch for just that, heck no IMO.
  • I agree. Do you REALLY need 24"? The ball doesn't have to hang way back behind the camper, unless you have a really weird trailer with a lot going on right above the coupler.

My camper hangs off the rear by 18", and I have a 14" extension, plus the shank, puts the ball just beyond the rear wall of the trailer. I have plenty of clearance and can turn as short as I want.
  • Assuming the trailer weighs around 700 lbs, you are looking at a 2000 lb tow. It's possible to use the extension, but make it as short as you can. 18 inches would be better. You are going to be weight challenged once you add the tongue weight no matter if you have a Superhitch or not. That would probably be your more pressing issue.

Here's another related thread on extensions. https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/29661175.cfm
  • I bought a TC specifically so I could camp and tow trailers. I think it really is a factor of how far your camper hangs off the back as much as weight. I just use a longer standard hitch (Reese 80232 16") and it's all good, further than that I'd be inclined to go with a Supertruss. This is the heaviest thing I tow with my 2000lb camper on the truck:

  • I think so too. I just used a hitch extension on my 350 to pull my trailer and quad. Just watch your tongue weight and where you place the ATV on the trailer.
