It is my understanding that the 5.0 in the new F-150 is a totally new OHC design and shares nothing with the old OHV 302's of the past, aside from the same displacement.
Exactly.
The new Ford Coyote is an OHC design....and my understanding has nothing in common with the old Ford OHV 302 (also known as the 5 liter)...or the Ford modular OHC V8 (4.6, 5.4) liter V8's which came out in the early '90's. This new 5 liter OHC...called the Coyote family of engines by Ford...is a totally new design that came out around 2010.
I'm not a Ford engine expert...this is just information I've picked up, talking to Ford guys. If I'm wrong, hopefully some Ford fans will correct me. As it is so new and has got nothing to do with the older Ford v8 designs...that's why I'm asking for info.
That being said, a very good friend of mine has a 2011 F150 5.0 as a work truck for his business. It sees a lot of miles every day in Houston traffic and is always carrying a near maximum payload at all times. He has had no issues at all and likes the power.
That's the kind of info I'm looking for. Thanks and hopefully more posters who own or know this new Ford truck, Coyote 5 liter V8....will keep on providing info on this relatively new engine.
I met with one of Ford's powertrain engineers during my last trip to Detroit. He said the 5.0 us still part of the "modular" family just like the 4.6L/5.4L/6.8L. It is higher compression, and an all new fuel and ignition system. But the basic architecture and many of the internals is carried over.
