I wrote a previous thread about the new F 150 with the 5 liter (Coyote) V8. Some may recall that I indicated that a friend is seriously considering buying a new FX4 , 4 door, 4WD F150, with the 5 liter V8. Responses were generally positive about this set up.But in view of the recent concerns (media, this forum) about the turbocharged Eco Boost V6...just to be on the safe side...as buying a new truck is an expensive proposition....are there any concerns about problems, reliability, durability with the Ford truck, 5 liter (Coyote) V8 available in the F 150 ?I realize the EcoBoost V6 issues, seem to concern moisture in the turbocharger...or something like that.I also realize that the new 5 liter V8 is fuel, injected and is not turbocharged....so therefore would not have this issue. Anyway...are there any known issues, problems with the Ford 5 liter (Coyote) V8 ? My friend really likes this truck...but wants to be sure as he keeps his vehicles for a long time, doesn't put high mileage on them and the great bulk of his ownership of any new vehicle...lasts well beyond any factory warranty.

So Ford has an old 5.0 and a new 5.0 on the market today?

The Ford 302 engine has been around since the 70's. I really think they have the bugs worked out.The new design is more a refinement, with direct fuel injection coming soon to some of the V8's, to provide even more fuel economy, and better mileage. Right now, I think it is still port fuel injection, something Ford has had since at least 1987. It is a great motor, with more than 150,000 miles expected before considering a rebuild. Many engines have well over 200,000 trouble free miles on them. Check any Home Depot, and you will find a parking lot full of Fords each weekday, picking up parts.Fred.

It is my understanding that the 5.0 in the new F-150 is a totally new OHC design and shares nothing with the old OHV 302's of the past, aside from the same displacement. That being said, a very good friend of mine has a 2011 F150 5.0 as a work truck for his business. It sees a lot of miles every day in Houston traffic and is always carrying a near maximum payload at all times. He has had no issues at all and likes the power.

The coyote 5.0 is part of the mod family (4.6 ,5.4 ,6.8 )been around a couple of years now- no worries.Direct injection is possible but only a rumour so far.

they are about the exact same, We went on a trip recently, both filled trucks before we left and filled 350KM later to see who used more gas. I used about 7 litres (about 2 gallons) more. Thus not a huger difference. Now his trailer is a little heavier, and he has the 3.73 rear end with max tow, and max payload. If he did not have that, he would likely get better mileage adn the mileage would be differnt.

So overall the vehicles are very comparable, just a different driving experience and sound.

I have a 2013 F150 5.0L 4x4 Supercrew short box with 3.55 gears and tow a 5,000 lb hybrid with absolutely no issue. I have 7,700 tow capacity and 1570 lb payload. The truck cruises along fine, and has plenty of power. At 60mph you hardly even know the trailer is there.

A friend has a 2012 EB, same truck only difference is he has max tow and max payload. His trailer is a little larger and heavier and he has absolutely no issues either.

Both engines are solid.

I went with the 5.0L for the fact that rebates when we bought were far better, and I couldn't justify the extra money for the EB and the so called fuel economy is not that much better to justify the added cost.

If I was towing heavier or towed lots I would go for the ecoboost, but for our relatively light trailer and towing 7-10 times per year the 5.0L is perfect. You also get the hear the V8 come to life under heavy acceleration versus the whine of the twin turbo

From everything I have read both the Ecoboost and Coyote are good engines. The inter cooler issue wouldn't scare me off if I was 1/2 ton shopping.

6 of us at work got 2013 Extra cab 4X4 F-150`s with the 5.0 and 3.73 gears back at the 1st of the year. I have 17,600 on mine now and while I don`t tow all that often, I`ve put 1200 to 1500 or so on it towing up to 7,000 lbs and I`m quite impressed with it. None of the 6 trucks has had any issues so far.

"A torque-biased variant of the Coyote is produced as an alternative to the EcoBoost V6 in the new F-150 pickup truck. The F150 5.0L receives a lower compression ratio (10.5:1), intake camshafts with less duration, cast iron exhaust manifolds, and revised cylinder heads and intake manifold intended to promote low-end and mid-range power and torque. The engine retains the Coyote's forged steel crank and piston-cooling jets but benefits from the addition of an external engine oil cooler similar to the Boss 302's. The changes result in the engine's peak horsepower dropping to 360 hp (268 kW; 365 PS) while torque remains the same as the Boss 302 at 380 lb·ft (520 N·m)."

For the record, the term "modular" has nothing to do with shared parts among Ford's engines. According to Wikipedia, it is a reference to the ability of Ford to change out tooling in their engine plants in a matter of hours to produce whatever engine is needed based on demand. They must be doing a lot of EB's these days.............

I met with one of Ford's powertrain engineers during my last trip to Detroit. He said the 5.0 us still part of the "modular" family just like the 4.6L/5.4L/6.8L. It is higher compression, and an all new fuel and ignition system. But the basic architecture and many of the internals is carried over.

I have almost 160k on my 2006 4.6 in my explorer and I am expecting another 100 if not more.

My wife's uncle has 300,000 miles on his 02 v6 explorer, so I'm not worried about longevity.

Most new f150 owners on this forum are opting for the ecoboost v6 since is it better suited for heavy hauling. However the new 5.0 is from the mod family and the modular architecture has been around since 1993.

The new 5.0 has nothing to do with the old pushrod 302.

I believe saying that you should expect 150k miles from a modern engine before a rebuilt, would scare the heck out of me.

I have almost 160k on my 2006 4.6 in my explorer and I am expecting another 100 if not more.
