New here. A few questions.

I live in Los Angeles. I am looking to buy an RV mainly for business reasons. I want to set up a place to stay in San Diego (2hrs away from Los Angeles) since I make deliveries there and don't want to stay in hotels for cost reasons AND mainly because I also need a place to park my Sprinter Work van that hauls its own Cargo Trailer.

I figured if I buy an RV, find a lot (here is where I will need some help/advice) that has enough space to park my van and trailer, I can save money in the long run and it will also be a convenience thing having all my equipment next to me without worrying about people tagging my white van or white cargo trailer.

Are there lots like this? If so, how do I begging to look for them? what are they called (if they have a specific name)?

Will/can the trailer be hooked up to plumbing? I would have to have to travel to empty it etc...

How much would a lot like this cost more or less?

The image shows my van and the white trailer (I also have a 2nd black trailer that I will need to store so i do need some flat/land space for them. Is this even possilble? Do trailer lots come with this much space?

  • Since it's business you can write some things off, but remember there are lots of the motels with kitchenettes at around 150 to 170 a night. A small storage unit isn't too bad for anything you might not want to haul around... So, if it is only a periodic stay... ??? IF you need "or want" a "base camp" in the area, then that 940 a month thing is worth considering... Good luck... There is something to be said for having your "own" place. To each their own...

  • The cheapest extended stay rate is $940 for 30 days. That's over $11,000 for the occasional overnight stay.

If you could come and go with the RV so you're not paying for nights you're not there it might be worth it. But with a work truck and trailer, that's not a likely option.

Not sure if your job would allow for it (depending on what you're hauling), but maybe you could switch out the current cargo trailer for a toy hauler. Use the TH to transport like the current trailer and then get a one night stay and sleep in the TH.
  • There is one place you might look is in Santee, about 20 minutes from San Diego, they have long term camping and cabins, also storage that you could park your van in,it may work out for you. Some sites are very large and may have room for both depending on the size of RV.

    Check it out Santee Lakes
  • You mention storing the black trailer also. That may be your biggest hurtle.

Getting an RV and setting it up at a year-round RV Park can be doable. Depending on what hotels you currently stay at, it is likely to be more expensive. Figure anywhere from $20-100 per night 365 days per year. That's a minimum of $7,300 just for the site. Electrical may be extra. And remember, that's on the cheap end of nightly rates - which may not equate to a place convenient or practical for you.

If you can get a year-round site, they most always have sewer, electric and water hookups, so that should not be a problem in and of itself.

Finding a year-round site that can also fit your work truck and white trailer may be more difficult. It's possible with a yearly rental and not staying there all the time, you could make an arrangement with the park owners/management to park the trailer on the property but not at your site.

Finding a year-round site to do all that PLUS have a place to store a second trailer is not likely.

Depending on how often you spend the night in San Diego, it may be a better option to find a slightly better hotel to stay at.
  • You may think that it would be cheaper to "camp" in a RV instead of hotel/motel..

May not be as cheap as you might think and most likely the campgrounds will be a bit more remote than you would like..

You may run into restrictions on min or max stay and potential of issues with getting reservations for the popular campgrounds.
