New Maxxis tires are 2 years old???

Hello, I enjoy reading topics on this forum and have learned a lot from you guys. This is my first post. With all the controversy of ST tires vs. LT tires, I decided to buy what many think are the best ST tires available since LT aren't an option in my size. I ordered 4 ST205/75R15 Maxxis M8008 tires from Summit Racing (a reputable company that was first to come up with google search) and got them today. I want to have the best experience with them. Checking them over, I found the last 4 digits of DOT # is "1314." They seem to be in brand new condition--must have been sitting around. So it appears they were made over 2 years ago, I'll call them tomorrow, but should I be concerned about this?

If they were sitting right next to a set were made this year, the difference would be obvious.
Those tires are 2 years old. Discount and other ST tire sellers reccomend replacement of ST tires at 3 years of age... The fact that they were in "storage" doesn't stop the aging process... It can only slow it down some.

You paid brand new money. You deserve brand new tires.

X2. When I replaced my tires, the tire shop ordered them and they were 18 months old. I refused them and they reordered. They understood and gave my no problems doing this.
  • I just got a set {5} of Maxxis 8008's 225/75/15 10 ply in January of 2016 from Amazon. Date on tires were 1715. So that puts them around April 1st 2015. If they would of sent me 2 year old tires I would of returned them.

  • Maxxis Warranty

I recently had a Maxxis tire start to separate while out on a trip. I contacted Discount tire and they said they could get me a new Maxxis by the next day at noon. When I went to have the new tire mounted I noticed it was over a year old. Discount assured me that they would warranty the tire 5yrs from the date of purchase. I had the manager note it on the receipt and sign it. Upon returning home, I called Discount tire main headquarters customer service line and complained about the tire being over a year old. I got the same assurance that the warranty starts on the date of purchase, and that this was a common occurence.

I looked at the date code on the tire that failed and it was over 5 yrs old and of course I no longer had the receipt from my neighborhood tire dealer where I originally purchased that tire. I loaded it in my truck anyway and took it to where I purchased it. He had my info from the original purchase and there was only a few months left on the 5th year. He took the tire and confirmed that the belts were starting to separate, contacted Maxxis, and his tire distributor to verify warranty. He called me within a couple of days and said he had a new tire there and I only owed $34.00. I asked how on earth could it only be $34 and he said they go by the tread wear and mine still had most of the tread.

So to make a long story short, the warranty starts on the date of purchase. If there is no receipt for proof of purchase date, or the dealer you purchased from is no longer in business, that leaves you with the date the tire was manufactured to retain warranty. I realize that is not how it is worded on the Maxxis web site and I'm not sure why. I can only assume that is in the case of the latter.

This is a little disconcerting since it shows a very slow timeline from manufacturer to customer. Are these tires moving that slowly with tire dealers like Discount or Les Schwab? I would think anything within a year would be acceptable, not sure about two years. The general rule of thumb is five years for RV tires and then replace. That means you really only have three years on these tires before you will start thinking about replacements if you follow the five year rule advice. Is that what you want?
  • According to the Maxxis warranty, you are covered for five years from the date of manufacture, NOT the date of purchase. See "What is warranted and for how long" in the attached document:

  • But with that old a tire KEEP YOUR receipt otherwise the warranty starts from date of manufacture
  • Stored in a warehouse they are not aging very fast. I would not worry.
  • I just bought 4 ST215/75R14 Maxxis M8008 tires from Discount Tire Direct, they had 0214 date, They are new and shiny, I don't know that it hurts anything. It would be nice to get something closer to the date that you order them.
  • It is common, by the time the tire works it's way from the manufacturer through the system to the dealer and end user two years can easily go by. I would contact them about either coming up with more current stock or cutting some slack on the price.
