New owner of Open Range LT308BHS

After strongly considering an Outdoors RV 27BHS, we decided on going a little larger and went with a bunkhouse model. I would have gone with Outdoors RV 31KQBS but the model has been discontinued, unfortunately, and it was just too heavy for a 1/2 ton. The 308 is a heavy trailer as well, but not quite as heavy.

It also has what seems a good build quality. Hope to enjoy many years in this travel trailer.

Will be towing with a max trailering package 2014 Silverado CC.
  • I will be sure to post up my towing experience and cat scales for all that are interested. 16,700 GCWR 17xx payload, I forgot the exact sticker number. 7200 GVWR, although in '15 the max tow pkg trucks went to 7600 with no mechanical differences between the two years. I don't believe I'll be over axle weight ratings, but I will be + 200lbs over GVWR if you use the 7200 rating, under if you use the 7600. + 100-200 over payload and about 1200 over GCWR,assuming a 10,500 trailer. Conservative estimates, but I'll get you all cat scale weights since that's the only thing that carries any weight around here. See what I did there?

Besides telling me that my tow vehicle is inadequate and/or not up to the task or directing me to trade it in for a 3/4 ton asap, I'd like to hear from some others who own an LT series Open Range, some of the issues they have had fixed or resolved since purchase and possibly some things I should ensure to have the PDI cover besides the usual.

APT: You're truck seems more capable than mine, especially with the LT tires. I have LT tires coming soon, as well.

I think he's living in the state of Denial.
  • I definitely don't want to criticize your setup and come across as the weight police but I would be hesitant about your set up. I'm a manager in a GM dealership and very familiar with your truck and your flirting way too close with the limits to be comfortable. However you have a beautiful trailer and enjoy your new camper and create lot's of memories with it.
  • Doable? GCWR? That's performance which will be acceptable by most. You have lots of power with either 5.3L or 6.2L. You'll be over GVWR by at least 500 pounds and rear axle by 400 pounds, more if you adjust the WDH per the trucks' owner's manual, and over the receiver's 1200 pound rating by 100-200 pounds. It's a 10k loaded bunk house! I don't know of any half ton owner (even the HD half tons like F-150 8200 pound GVWR or GM's 10 year old 1500HD which was really a 3/4 ton) report a pleasant experience towing 10k pound RV. You're in for a shock. If you already have the truck at $30-50k. Then that RV is in the $30-35k range. Are you willing to upgrade the truck with one more capable immediately? We are here as owners with experience to help you save money or enjoy the RVing lifestyle.

What does this sticker posted on driver's door jam say you have for as equipped payload were mine says 2051?

I really like a lot of things about the OR Light line. I am very interested in the LT305 which is borderline for my TV.
  • Yeah it's heavy but doable. I have seen others towing with identical trucks on the gm-trucks forum, without any issues. Stopping and pulling, no problem, even on grades. The new tow-haul mode/grade braking feature on these new '14+ trucks is phenomenal. I'll get it set up properly with the WDH/antisway and see if bags are really required. They could help with some porposing on bumps, I'm expecting some of that.
  • Congrats on the purchase! I sincerely hope you haven't bitten off more than you can chew with your truck. I have an Open Range TT also with pretty similar specs that I tow with an F250. Honestly, I can't imagine towing it with a 1/2 ton. The 940 lbs of empty hitch weight is pretty heavy for a TT and I bet it'll squat the rear end of your truck quite a bit. Hopefully you're going to install a WDH and sway control; might also consider airbags.

But you've already bought it so load it up and see how it does.
  • Thanks for your input. You're right, I will probably be over the GCWR 16,700 loaded up ready to go.

That better be a 3/4+ ton truck, but based on other comment I don't think it is. There is no half ton ever produced that I would recommend for that TT. 10k tow rated, 12k tow rated, whatever. Not enough receiver rating, payload, and probably axle rating in them.
