New Snow Birds Looking For Help

Hello, we are new to this as we have purchased our first 20 ft long travel trailer and are interested in learning about the most economical way to spend a few months in the Florida or Arizona areas during January and February. Health issues force us to find a warmer climate to spend the coldest months. We are home in Nashville Tn. area and looking for hints, tips, advice and meeting new friends.
I see there are thousands of choices and hoping to get some advice.
We ideally would like to find somewhere we could park our trailer monthly and then disconnect and do some sightseeing and possibly take a cruise while having a safe secure place for our second home.
We have a dog so pet friendly is important.
We are in our early 60s and have some health issues but are otherwise young at heart.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

  • With your desire to go somewhere warm and also perhaps also to do a cruise I think Florida is your best bet since you start from Nashville.

Just arbitrarily picking Orlando as a base in Florida and cruising out of Port Canaveral your total miles round trip would be 1500 with about $300 for fuel.

That assumes you get 10 miles to the gallon with gas costing you $2 a gallon.

Now if you went to Texas deep down in the Rio Grande Valley at Mission where it is warm you would have to cruise out of Galveston which is way north (400 miles) so your total miles down and back including cruising would be 3000 with a fuel cost of $600.

Of course if you went down to the Mission Texas area you could do your cruise on the way down there or when going back north which would save you an 800 mile round trip. Texas is a big state. Remember, it is 400 miles up to Galveston if you are already down in the Mission Texas area.

If you would decide on Arizona then Yuma is your best bet. You could then cruise out of San Diego. The total miles in that case would be 4000 with a fuel cost of $800.

Now Orlando is sort of the breakpoint in Florida where above that it is a little bit colder and below that it becomes much warmer so you would have to adjust your location in Florida based on whether you want toasty warm all the time or you can put up with some chilly mornings farther north where your camping cost would be much cheaper.

Of course you're camping cost in Florida will be a lot higher than Arizona or Texas but if you look around carefully there are deals especially if you can stay farther north. And the cruise opportunities out of Florida are vastly better than Galveston or San Diego.

I hope this helps you a bit with your decision making process. And half the fun is in the planning they say.
  • If you are going for January you have better hurry you have on day left.
  • Lots of affordable options for RV space
in Yuma AZ. Can't beat the weather in Jan-Feb-Mar.
  • May we suggest south of Orlando and Tampa area as it is warmer. We are in the Ft. Myers area and love it here.
  • Most importantly make sure you have health insurance that covers you out of state.
  • Go on line and find a RV park Orlando area or further South. Hook up and go. What is there do learn about snow birding? It is just camping in a warm climate in the Winter and for a longer time than a week end!
  • If I lived in Nashville I would concentrate on locations in Florida south or equal to the Orlando latitude.
For lots of reading you could search this Forum for `Florida' in the RV Parks section.
We are presently at Blueberry Hill RV Resort in Bushnell just off I-75 at MM-314. They usually have space.
  • In Tucson I have stayed at both the Voyager and Rincon west. I enjoy both. Both are pet friendly. These are full on resorts with all the amenities. You stated you want to make new friends. That to me implies you would enjoy social activities, and both of these places have many, many daily activities. Everything from mild to moderate sports, to bible study and photography groups, etc. On and on, there is an activity for everyone.
You can check their websites for rates to see if they fit your budget.
It's a wonderful way to spend the winter.
  • Well we are biased, but we love south-TX and many folks from our park drive to Galveston for cruises and then take the tour bus down to Mexico for day trips. We are in Rockport just north of Corpus Christi. Need any thing specific, send us a PM.
