New to us camper- 1988 Jayco

Here are some pictures of our new to us Popup. It is a 1988 Jayco 1006. We purchased it for $500, there was no real problems with it besides cosmetic stuff. We put in a new floor (sticky tiles) Caulked everything, painted the frame and rims black, new curtains and reupholstered the table cushions. We have maybe $200 into it so not to bad to keep the 5 of us off the ground. Sometime in the future is replacing the Ice box with a dorm fridge.

One question that I have is the door. With the camper level the door has a large gap(look at the pictures). Do you have any suggestions for fixing this? I have tried moving the hinges and trying to straighten the frame but no luck.
  • You've done a great job putting new life into the camper. It looks good, and for that price, you got a STEAL. The updating really is a nice touch. My first PUP was a Jayco and I'm kind of partial towards them.

I'm not good with two-part doors so I can't help much there. When you say you're level, where are you measuring that from? I would try it with a spirit level on the floor for both front-to-front and side-to-side.

It looks like the upper door is on a piano hinge from top to bottom. Is that so? Does the actual hinge bend towards the left (rearward) as you trace from the bottom to the top of it?

The other thought that occurs to me is that right side (forward) of the bottom of the upper door has some space between it and the bottom door that does not exist on the left (rear-ward) side. I assume there is a latch that ties the bottom door to the upper door so they swing as one. If that latch is good and tight and there's no gap between the upper and lower at that spot, there is likely a gap on the hinge end of it between the upper and lower sections.

I would really examine that point to see what's going on. Good luck and let us know how that and everything else goes.

Keep an eye on that center roof seam. Because of paranoia, I put Eternabond on both roofs of my PUPs before water had a chance to compromise the roof. So far, so good.
  • Nice unit. Congrats. Nothing like sleeping in a pup.

looks like it is sagging on the lower door on the latch side. without a closeup it is hard to tell. maybe a shim to raise it on the latch side where it meets the lower door.

the small 1.7 cf fridges are cheap. 80 bucks. it will be a nice addition. check all of your propane fittings as well.

Have fun and post some camping pics.
