New Toyo OpenCountry A/T IIs have a semi-heavy weight size

For what it's worth. The new Open Country A/T IIs are hitting the shelves and specifically the LT295/75/16 has a load index of 128 or 3970 lbs. These will be my next tire. 3 ply side wall and a tread composed of 3 polyester, 2 steel and 2 nylon. Very stout! Sold my 19.5s and went back to regular tires, boy my truck is a pleasure to drive again.

  • Initially, I reluctantly went to the 285/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on mine. I wanted the extra weight capacity, but did not want a taller sidewall wondering if it would add to possible sway.

    I wish I changed to these tires sooner because they handle extremely well! No noticeable sway even with a taller tire... plus, they look better filling a little more of the trucks wheel well.

    I researched the possibility of 19.5's, but they do not offer a decent all- year, all-around tire tread... and I did not want all that extra weight. The 19.5's will wear out steering and suspension components much quicker. The Nitto TG tires mounted on stock factory steel wheels are the best tire combination for the money for my set-up.
  • I like my 19.5's on my 2005 Ford. They changed the chassis and front end design compared to yours. We rarely use the truck empty, that may also be why we don't get beat up - It's always towing or hauling something. My 245/70R19.5 PD890's did well last season over Stevens Pass but I do have to be careful in lose sand.

    I had 265/70R18 Michelins before the 19.5's. They rode well empty and loaded, but were too close to maximum rating when I am loaded and hitched up at the same time.

    I would probably want to regear to run your 35" tall tires with my load. The 33's are just about right and my stock 31's let the engine rev more than it needed.

    OK so I bit the bullet and Switched to 18" wheels and tires. I chose a wheels made by Vision with a load rating of 3650 which gives me total load ability of 7300lbs per axel. The most I've ever weighed on the rear axel was 7100. Really good looking rims too. The tires are te new Toyo Open Country AT2 size 285/75/18 with a load index of 129 or a rating of 4080lbs. This new setup will be installed Friday by Les Schwab. I sold my 19.5 setup. I drove with 19.5s for 7 years and I won't go back to them. I hated the ride the handling and they beat the hell out of my suspension. I installed a 2.5" front leveling kit installed new ball joints, tie rods and KYB Monomax shocks all around and truck is riding great again. I know the new setup will be more than adequate to carry our NL 10.2 CD. Will post pics after install.
  • I have 285/75-16 Nitto's on my Silverado. Rated for 3750#. Quiet ride. They bulge a bit more than I like, but my 830 is pretty heavy.

    Good explanation Reality. I lived in North Bend for 20 years and still pass through to head to my property near Cle Elum so I know you know our conditions. What size H/Ts do you have on your truck?

    I switched a couple of years ago to the H/T's.. higher rating, even quieter, and still an all season tire. Probably won't go back. Most of our driving is in the winter/mountains towing, and I have yet to 'miss' the A/T over the H/T.

    Still glad to here the up'd the rating. The sidewalls on the A/T's were way to thin and I lost several over the years on work trucks because of the weight.
  • I've had the Terra Grapplers. Got 18,000 miles out of them. At 62,000 miles on the truck I'm into my 4th full set. Had Pro Comp AT's, BFG MT KO's and now BFG AT's. Nothing holds up to 4wheeling with a camper. The truck now has 66,000 miles and the new AT's have 4,000 miles. 1 has already been replaced, shredded, and another is now the spare. Given more money I'd try Toyo, but I doubt I'd get much better at this point.

    I see that Nitto has a heavy-duty in the Dura-Grappler, only problem for me is it's only in the 17" rim size whereas the Toyo is available in the 16". Those Dura-Grapplers will be a great tire I'm sure. I've been running the Terra-Grapplers for several years.

    Just had 4 Dura Grapplers 285/75-17 highway tread delivered. Getting them mounted on Monday. These things are really stout- look like smaller OTR truck tires.

    They also have "Terra Grapplers" for a bit more off pavement driving- same weight carrying capacity.

    This is good news. Several high capacity load rated tires have gone away in the last 4 years. I have the Open Country 285/75R16 A/T's on the front but they are a lower load rating.
    I'll have a look at them when they are here in the flesh. That's an interesting size.
    The current one's i'm looking at on all four corners are Mickey Thompson LT 375/65R16's (or 36x15.50R16) Diameter is 35.4". Load rating is only 3750, and they must go on wider rims (10"-13" wide) and is more of a big-void mud tire.
