I looked at new trucks (4x4 diesel dually) and the price sent me running for the hills.
I found what should have been a killer deal: a '99 Dodge Quad Cab 4x4 dually, near mint with 80k on it, with a new reman Cummins and a new trans (auto). It has EVERYTHING, polished Alcoas, a Gear Vendors overdrive, a Kelderman air ride system, just everything.
$16,000.
But the new reman was the famous Cummins "53" block that always cracks, and it cracked. The new trans was just a stock one, so it's junk to begin with.
All of this is being fixed as I speak, but I'll have over $10,000 more into it. I'm knocking right on $30,000. Am I still happy with it? Yes, and it's practically a new truck now... but if I wanted to sell it, or if something happened to it and I had to take an insurance settlement on it, I'd only get half that.
It almost makes me wonder if I should have bought a new one.
Probably not.
