wing zealot and JIMNLIN,
I guess you posted while I was replying to KD4UPL.
I must really not understand trucks and towing. I often read comments about guys towing a zillion pound trailer down the highway at 65+ mph, with little effort. I just presumed the bigger HD truck/motor they describe would pull a small trailer like mine with ease, even at interstate speed.
I'll have to do some more learning.

As another poster mentioned the later model 6.2 gm cranks out 420 hp and 460 torque. Thats a big jump in towing performance over your older vehicles hp/torque.
I sometimes tow with the wifes '16 1500 chevy 4wd crew cab short bed 5.3 engine at 355 hp/383 torque and the 6 speed tranny 3.42 gears pulling a 12k or a 10k flatbed trailer with a tall 7600 lb tractor FEL and a cab (9400-9600 lbs on the trailers axles). Out on the highways at speed I use either 4th or 5th manually and never go over 60 mph. It pulls like a lead sled even with my 355 hp/650 torque Dodge/Cummins.
The 3/4 ton GM/Ram/Ford with the deeper gear ratios available would pull my 10k-12k lead sled easier but not in top OD pulling steep grades.
For pulling at interstate speeds out here in high head wind country or long mountain grades for that kind of performance the new gen diesel will do it in top OD gear.
