I can see possibly buying new in this case, although it is normally against my SOP too.
In 1994 a young... ahem... relative... wrecked my trusty 1976 truck that I had just painted (DIY) amongst other updates. Since I stood to began work about 120 miles away for a while, I wanted to buy a newly popular smaller truck for better mileage. But I didn't want to give up cab room, reasonable power nor 4x4. Small mini trucks, with both extra cab and V6, were a relatively recent item yet.
Used trucks, especially combined with the 4x4 option, flew off the "pre-owned" lot in about one day, and all were overpriced. One private-sale 2 year old S-10 truck I found had a 4 cylinder, 100k miles and a beat up box (field rock?) and was offered at $15K. Probably why it was still there when I got there.
Instead I bought a spanking new Mazda B4000 (same as Ford Ranger) 4.0L V6, 4x4, extra cab, rated 22 mpg EPA for $17k. And it didn't smell like cigarette smoke, common nuisance back then. Seemed like a lot of money, since my full size HD 4x4 '76 Chevy only cost about $5k new, but hey.
Because of the rapid performance gains in diesels just the last few years, I think you are looking at the same skewed selling prices. With the newest updated performance comes a solid, lasting favorable resale I would assume. That will lower ownership cost for the next 20 years or so.
By the way, Mazda lied. I only got about 21 mpg max.
