I agree. It was 7 dollars a person each way on the water taxi into New York. We were in walking distance from One World trade Center.

We spent more money on the Jersey Turnpike then we did taking ferries and the subway in New York.

  • My suggestion would be to pull into Central Park. Barring that, consider camping someplace nice like Denver and take an overnight flight.
  • Ended up in Black Bear campground, about an hour from Times Square. $105 per person for all day tour, includes campground pickup and Statue of Liberty ferry. Well worth it to us. Traffic is so bad and no way to get camper downtown. Campground was good. It works great for TC'S because we don't have tows. They have a good web site.
  • KOA in Newburgh NY. About an hour from the city. Offers luxury bus tour (all day). Leaves campground at 7am. We loved it! Not cheap but so worth it. Also if you want to go into the city on your own, there is a train station a few miles from the campground in Beacon NY. About an hour train ride into the city. Newburgh KOA is beautiful with lots of trees, pool, things to do. Long level pull thru sights and some back ins.
  • When you get in the city just buy a GrayLine tour ticket. It will give you a pretty good tour , you can get off and on the tour at your points of interest.

Just get to a bus subway station to get downtown. We always used a cab for late night travel.

  • No.

But the best place to stay is Liberty Harbor in NJ. There are ferries and subways just minutes from NYC.

All the other campgrounds are a long ways out of town.

See our blog approximately May/June 2009.
