Unless you will not be driving the diesel to work I wouldn't get a diesel.
That commute would be hardest on a DPF engine, but any diesel will not like it. There just isn't time to build any heat, you really will have a hard time with a gasser too thou.
You don't really want to idle a cold diesel as it's hard on them since they warmup so slowly, thou many think it's good Cummins, International, Cat all say the opposite.
Flooring it out of the subdivision on any engine just sounds like a problem waiting to happen, especially a diesel. Let things warm up first.
No need for a 5-10 minute cool down from a 1 mile drive, even towing at max GCWR up a hill only needs about 5 minutes to properly cool down.
For a 9K lb trailer a diesel is a better tow rig, but you have to compromise it with your regular use. Unless you can find a beater commuter for at that 1 mile drive I would stick to gas.
Sitting won't hurt a diesel, mine sits most the time since I picked up a DD. Just drive it every 2-3 weeks when it's not in use, and be sure to let it warm all the way up which for my truck is about 15 miles or more in the winter.
