Newer Chevy 2500HD rear diff ratios and engine differences?

The DW is letting me step up to a new truck to replace my aging 2001 2500HD.

I know the newer 2500HD now have 6 speed transmissions but does the differential ratios matter that much with the new transmission? Are there even options for different ratios? My current 2500HD gasser has the 4.11 gears and tows our 5k lb TT well but the city gas mileage is dismal at 10-11 mpg. I'm not sure if I need the tallest gear to pull a 5k trailer but someday, I want upgrade to a little larger bumper pull so that gear ratio maybe important down the line.

Also, are there any differences in the more current 6.0 gas engines vs the 16 year old 6.0 I have now? The only thing I've found is GM made very small HP and torque increases over the years.
  • We bought a 2015 GM HD - 6.0L w/4:10 ... Moved up from a 2003 w/6.0 and 3:73. Was very happy with the 2003 gearing, and disappointed that 3:73 was unavailable for the 2015 ... BUT, have changed my mind - the 6.0L/6 speed/ with 4:10 is an excellent setup. Now, if I had it to do again, I'd forget the 3:73 even if available.

    We get 16+ mpg empty and between 11-12 mpg hauling a 3500 lb truck camper - and sometimes a 2900 lb cargo trailer at the same time. Very sweet match up ...
  • I'll clarify that I will be buying a used truck, probably 2013 or newer but thanks for the offer, Dadoffourgirls. Why a 3500 over 2500...just the payload difference? I'm assuming the drive train is the same between a 2500 and 3500, correct?

    A small block can rev a couple thousand RPMs higher all day where mine would blow up

    Gotta know where you wish your RPMs to be at while towing/cruising/etc...


    Or you could just say get 4.10s for towing cause they're better when you don't have unlimited power under the hood....

    Then the tire's rev's per mile factor all this

    Take my 7.4L big block gasser. Max torque is attained around 1,400 RPMs and continues at that level till about 3,800 RPMs

    Red line is solid at around 4,800 RPMs with a dash red line starting around 4,300 RPMs



    Over sized tires by about 7%, so the indicated speed is slow by about that amount. Indicates about 65 MPH, but actual is a bit over 70 MPH on this image

    The current 2500HD has the 4.10 standard, and no option. The 6 speed will help some in fuel economy.
  • The 6-speed transmission is a big step up, that you will notice. I think the newer GM 2500 6.0 has 4.10 gearing standard, maybe can order 3.73, but I would not.
