Newer D/A owners, please chime in.

In my quest of purchasing a new TV/DD, I decided to swing by my local GMC dealer this weekend to check out their offerings.

The only Duramax they had was a 3500 Denali. Took it for a ride and was impressed. Felt very light on steering and braking and throttle response was nice. It was a bit bouncy, but it was an unloaded 3500. I am in the market for 2500 so I assume it will be a bit softer.

Curious how these trucks hold up long term? I realize the 2015 redesign is still pretty new, but the powertrain has been around for a bit. I am aware they are IFS, but for the weight I am towing I don't see that being a limiting factor.

Things I liked:
-Drives a lot like a gasser. Not too noisy and good throttle response/power available.
-Tow gear available (3.73 standard) compared to Ram/Ford.
-Nice interior
-Console setup is big and useful
-Modern amenities like lane control, LED/HID head lights
-Massive fuel tank

Things I didn't like:
-Why can't GM make a steering wheel straight?
-4x4 and brake controller on left side of wheel.
-Cooled seat option only on Denali model
-No heated rear seats. It's available on it's competitio
-DEF under the hood- I am tall and it's hard to reach. Tank seems to hang low but I wouldn't be rock crawling it.
-Lame wheel options
-Lack of a sliding rear window on some expensive models. The one I drove was $67K MSRP and had no sliding rear window.
-Nav screen look ok, but the area surrounding it makes it look like a base model.

Overall I thought it was a very good vehicle. Drove nice, looks nice. Curious how they hold up though. My GFs 2007 Tahoe was nice but the leather didn't fair well. The Electronics didn't either. It did make it to 180K miles before she got rid of it and it was dependable aside for the little things.

for those that tow with the D/A combo on a newer platform, how do you like it? Any major issues? I know Ford/GM had fuel pump issues early but it appears those issues have been worked out.

Appreciate any feedback on these vehicles.

  • Be glad that the DEF is under the hood.
I makes it pretty hard to brain fart it and pour DEF into the fuel tank. There are quite a few Ford guys that have done this, and now understand why GM put it where they did.

Go to any Ford forum, and this is one of the biggest problems...
Go to any GM forum and it is non existent.

If you should make this mistake,,, it is VERY expensive.
  • Would be hard for me to choose between a new Dmax and a new Cummins, except for the Mega cab.
IMO, very few need a million mile engine, discounting the eventual 5th owners of the truck!
Ifs is not a worry. Just as reliable as a sfa truck and rides better IMO.
Brake controller location doesn't matter. How many times you manually grab the trailer brakes?
Def tank and fill locations are ********, but not a problem just goofy or an inconvienece.
I can all but guarantee you'll love a new Dmax.

Do you have a hard time getting the DEF in? I could barely get the hood close it was so high lol. I am 6-1

What makes the rear window get deleted on Denali model then?

denali models at least on the 2500 the sliding power rear window is standard.

I'm 6ft, and really don't have any trouble getting filling the DEF fluid.

  • we have a 2015 2500 GMC denali. Had a 2004.5 before that with 125K when it went to our son. Never had been to the dealer other than regular service. Zip problems.

we love the 2015. Had there been a 3500SRW in the color and denali trim in Crew cab short box we would have got it. 2500 and 3500SRW are virtually the same price. 3500 give an additional 1700lbs in payload.

agree on the no heated/cooled rear seat.
IMHO the IFS give a better ride and shorter turning circle than SFA,

2500 has way more wheel options than the 3500. likely due to the additional load rating of the 3500.

As far as comfort and quiteness it's the most comfortable vehicle we've had and also the quitest. We'll have 18,000 miles on it by it's one year anniversary.

Denali has Sliding rear window as std.

one comment. IMHO do NOT get a tan leather interior. to many have problems with blue jean dye rubbing off and discoloring the seat. Go for the black leather, which we have which is much more like a charcoal.

I'm used to GM layout, so the 4wd, lights etc. were in a natural place, but I suppose it's all what your used to.

The center console is very very useable, especially with the drop in accessories and compartments.

And the lighted bed on the Denali really is nice at night.

on ours, the highway unloaded fuel mileage is better than our 2004 by about 2mpg. towing, virtually the same. But with that 35 gallon tank, I have gone 750 miles, over the continetal divide and two other passes between montana and oregon and still not had the reserve light come on. Takes some control keeping the speeds down, but can be done. And going down to san diego on I-5 we averaged over 20mpg going 5 over the limit the whole way.
