I don't think that is diesel thing. At least not where I live where it gets to 100F plus. It is common to see vehicles with both types of engines idling at the Sonic drive in and some of the gaser trucks are louder than the diesels.

My neighbor across from me is on of them. Even though he is over 50 yards from where my house sits, I can hear his late model GM 1500 every time he starts it, idles for a minute, and drives away every morning from my kitchen.

If you have a diesel with a straight pipe (no muffler), I have news for you.
You're "THAT GUY" to everyone else in the campground. You know, the guy most people wonder when you're checking out so they can have peace and quiet again. May as well bring along a contractor generator powered by a briggs and stratton, that runs at ear splitting loudness levels and run it all day too. Or maybe unload a straight piped noisy davidson motorcycle and idle it for 45 minutes while you put your pirate costume on and rev it needlessly (in the city at every stop light) like a 12 year old with a clothes pinned playing card in his bicycle spokes. 'Cuz you know....loud pipes save lives while annoying everyone within 2 miles.

Those losers have trained me to immediately turn on the recirculation setting for the HVAC. I can do it in less than a second! :)

The thing I'm most envious about new diesels is their ability to make gobs of power and no smoke at all.
Every time I see someone "rolling coal" I think what a POS.

I wish mine HAD the train horns. I'd really like to (literally) honk off idiots and jerks that think they own the road.

Some time ago I saw a pick-up truck blowing belches of black smoke and sounded like he had no muffler at all of any type. Noisy and black belched out of that machine. I thought to myself ... how stupid!
