In the article their still saying its a 3/4 ton? I don't get it... I just figured it was a heavy half ton truck because of the payload being where its at....Regardless u wont see one in my driveway...

I looked at one at the Houston Auto Show. The payload sticker showed 1,377 lb, which seemed low for a supposed HD pickup. But, I assume they must have it officially classified as a 3/4 ton, because it is not required to have official EPA fuel economy numbers posted on the sticker like every other 1/2 ton pickup does. I asked the Nissan rep about this, and she had absolutely no clue. She just wanted to talk about how nice the paint was.

That's pretty much exactly what I expected. The numbers are funky but when you get it out in the real world, the Titan XD is going to smoke the other half tons when it comes to towing/hauling. The problem Nissan has is going to be convincing people not to just step all the way up to a standard heavy duty truck for the same price.

We'll start out positive and say that when carrying a heavy load, the Nissan crushed its competition. While the F-150 and Ram had difficulty running our drive routes and other tests in a confident, controlled manner with 1,750 pounds in the bed, the Nissan felt composed and stable. Several of our drivers noted that if they hadn't seen the factory numbers, they'd guess the XD could carry another 1,000 pounds without a problem.

What facts or figures are so good they smoke the other guys? I see a couple numbers better here and there and they are only marginally better. In many cases so close, its a statistical tie among the majority, in my eyes.

And regarding payload of the XD, I have not yet seen any numbers posted that show it has a 1,750 or better payload cap. Yet that's what they threw in the back and tested with. Am I missing something?

The point I was trying to make is that this Titan XD isn't rated any heavier than a lot of half tons already available, but the heavier construction (a ton+ heavier than a comparable F150) and diesel engine should make it a much better real-world performer with a load. That seemed to be the conclusion the test drivers reached in the article that was linked.

The problem it's going to have is there's not much or even any pricing gap between current half tons and the heavy duty trucks, so I think most people would just opt for whichever suited their needs better rather than taking the middle ground.
  • This truck is all new and just out. Nissan engineers and management know they cannot make the same mistakes from their first Titan. I'm sure there will be additional suspension options as time goes on to ensure a proper "3/4 ton" load capability. We'll just have to see. So far it looks good, perhaps not for fifth wheel pullers, but certainly for many boat and light campers. I guarantee if I were looking today, it would be on my short list.

At $35,000 it would be a bargain. At $53,000, Ram, Ford or GM provides way more capability and capacity for the money. Also, you might want to double check the timing gears/chain issue, and the fuel pump. It is not the little brother to the 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins. It might work fine forever but these are the things I would look into before parting with my money. Why did Ram depart from their successful, productive, wonderful and long lasting relationship with Cummins for their half ton 1500 diesel??? Something to think about!

  • It's a nice looking truck and will fit a certain market segment, albeit a very small market segment because of it's low payload capacity.
