noob rooftop air and wall mounted home a/c dealer practices

when a new entry level priced trailer is supposed to have roof mounted rv air in its mandatory package and the unit has a wall mounted home a/c what does it mean? does the manufacturer or dealer install a wall mounted home a/c? i saw one with a home a/c and the install looked very sloppy and i'm wary of the unit and dealer now especially when trying to set my offer.

  • My first unit had a wall mounted A/C. We loved it. Quiet, efficient, cheap, and easily replaced when the time came... If it is installed well I wouldn't hesitate but trust your gut and suit your own needs and desires. There's certainly no shortage of RVs on the market.
  • I purposely bought a Starcraft hybrid TT because it had a side mounted home type AC. Having a heavy AC mounted in the middle of the roof while bouncing down the highway just never appealed to me. My storage area has limited overhead clearance so having no roof AC reduces the overall height. Also the home AC is quieter and if it has the necessary BTU rating it should be fine. Mine has a heavy expanded metal screen outside to protect the cooling fins.

I Also have a folding Aliner that utilizes a side mounted home AC.
  • I am a little confused. Does the mfg's brochure show a standard roof top unit? i have seen more and more smaller trailers using home window units. I can't say that i would rule one out because of it. I mean if it cools the trailer why not? super cheap to buy and can be sourced from Walmart i am going to guess that a removal and install would be prretty easy too. also, supposedly more energy efficient than the rooftop monsters. I don't see a disadvantage to them.

Some installs look better than others, i wouldn't want the coils exposed some sort of (exterior) grating would protect and trim out the install.

That said if your gut is telling you to walk on the deal then do it. there are plenty of other dealers and plenty of trailers...some of who may want to clear the lot before winter.
