Our friends use solar panels that they got from a home/garden store for $100.

I found Northern Arizona Wind & Sun to be great in helping me determine what I needed/wanted for solar. They are very easy to talk to, stock a wide range of solar electric products. Typically, they have more than one manufacturer for a given component, which allows them to offer good prices and a system tailored for your needs.
Besides reading the old threads regarding solar...where should I start?

You must know what you need, to properly size your solar. Most people simply install panels on the roof and cross their fingers. Unfortunately, the results can be they need more, and to expand their system they have to replace some of what they have with money wasted.
Anyway, I guess solar is in our future. Will it keep the batteries fully charged? We try to be frugal with our power, so I was surprised that this happened, as we have 2 grp 27 batteries.
I suggest you call and Ask Randy at Best Converter about installing a TriMetric Battery Monitor. Among other things, it will allow you to know where your 12-volt usage is. This will allow you to determine what you really need for solar.
While you are studying solar, you might want to replace most if not all of your lighting with LEDs. If you pay more than $12 per bulb replacement, you are paying too much. My preference is the flat LED boards. Cheaper than bulbs, and point the light downward.
