NY and inspection and registration question

I live in NY... i have had my TT for two years now...each year i register it(almost $100.00) and i have it inspected for another fee. I am a seasonal camper and only tow my camper twice per year(april to my campground and october to my house). Does anyone know if NY offers a temp registration or temp inspection? I dont mind paying for the inspection to make sure its safe, but i hate paying that registration fee when i only have it on the road twice per season for around 100 miles total....any ideas? thank you.

  • Wish i saw this earlier as i just sent in the registration. So how long does the inspection take? Can I just make an appointment and pull in or will I have to leave it? Mine is only going on second year of ownership so have not had this experience.

I wait until April until I register mine. Saves about $30. Law says you have to register it but if it were me and I only towed to and from seasonal site 1x year, I may reconsider if I actually registered it. It's all back roads to my seasonal site anyway.

I went for 5 years without registering ours (CT), but since the police now have Plate Readers, I register every year. I was told by State Police that if the camper is found to be unregistered, they have the right to unhook, and impound.

  • As others have stated the NY registration is a calendar year on TT's. At $100.00 per year that comes to less than $9.00 per month. If you register it in the month you move it, say April, you will save on the previous months, save $27.00..
  • The only temp inspection is the grace period for re-inspection when you fail, and the only temp registration is for dealer sales. Maybe it would be cheaper to store it at the CG? I know that trailers go on a calendar year basis, so if you register April 1 they prorate and you only pay 75% of the annual cost...unless that changed since we moved, that's about the only break you'll get.
  • As you know NYS trailer registrations need to be renewed in December (or maybe it is January) anyway - we DO NOT register our vehicle until April or sometimes as late as May when we will start to use it again......it saves us about 1/2 of what the registration fee actually is......we don't do anything on the back side as we use the trailer until the end of October and never thought about the last two months.....but I might check it out next year!
