The early Tritons used 5W30. they switched to 5W20 for fuel mileage savings. noting else changed other than the Oil Cap.
5w30 is acceptable. Avoid the heavier "cold" weights, like 10WXX and especially 15WXX. Cold starts are when that motor sees starvation issues. My brother tried some 15w40 in his because he had a bunch extra, and it clattered like a diesel. He ended up draining and refilling without even leaving the driveway.
FWIW - I run 0W40w. At 423,000 HARD miles, mine does drink a little oil if I run 5w20 these days.
PS - Mine started showing signs of valve stem leakage around 150k (occasional oil puff at startup). I switched to synthetic and after a few oil changes, that problem went away completely, even to this day. I'm guessing the synthetic oils keep the seals more pliable.
