Ok, so you have tested some of the trailer's light circuits and have found no continuity from the wires at the tongue to the fixtures? If that is the case, I would abandon the idea of using the existing wiring and pull new wires to the back of the trailer. I have restored a couple of vintage trailer wiring systems and what I've found is that they are poorly laid out and there are terrible connection issues. The last one I did (the Cowboy/Hilton in my signature line), I pulled new wire into the ceiling for marker lights and also put wire in a conduit below the floor for brake, signal, and tail lights.
Here are charts for conventional trailer pinouts. You will also need to establish a ground that references vehicle ground through the connection to the vehicle (a single wire well connected to trailer frame).
