There is no difference if it's the same year model - we have them at work and a same model year 2wd 1500, 2wd 2500 and 2wd 3500 are all the same size. Same with each in 4wd.
The difference is when you compare different years.
I remember reading an article that pointed out that back in the 70s a full size pickup was about the size of a Dodge Dakota. If you compare a Dakota to a current 1500, the size difference is massive.
