On street parking problems Portland

If this is from 4 years ago, what's the situation now?
And, why Portland? Does this go on elsewhere as well?
And, why on the streets vs open areas, much less likely to be sideswiped by passing vehicles?

The problem is the majority of homeless are either mentally ill and/or drug addicts.

Unfortunately, the days of putting the in an asylum for the rest of their lives are gone (with some good reasons of course) but that means they are out on their own. Even when offered a free place to stay, many will reject it.

I also feel sympathy for the local property owners. Some of these people are dangerous, so can't just let the kids go out on their own in the area and it does drag property values down.

I don't have a good solution but it's not a simple problem of throwing some money at it.

I visited Portland many times in 2010 and 2011 while staying long term at the SP south of there but no more as to dangerous now for my comfort level. Enjoy other Oregon areas and other states for fishing and camping. Happy Trails

Sure, they'll tow a few RV's off the streets -- anything to look like they are "doing something".
But in speaking to several friends and family who live there, Portland has no intention of doing anything different long term. They've convinced themselves that they live in Nirvana.

I thought Portland was a sanctuary city and welcomed everyone?

It is sad, Don, but if one of these RVs park in front of your home or business it is dangerous and can ruin your business. Francisco “Junior” Claudio my be a nice guy but IMO many of these campers are mentally ill. The other fact is that if one parks...more follow.
