Onan Generator

Do you have an Onan generator in your TC? Are you happy with it? How much maintenance is required? How noisy is it?

    Precisely.
With the addition of 200 watts of solar on the roof, the batteries stay charged all the time (thou I am partial to sunny weather).:)
  • We have the Onan 2500 works well but is noisy added the onan resonator which helped a lot but it's still no Honda. Have two 2000I's that were used with our last trailer and loved them , The onan in the TC serves it purpose and have solar to keep the batteries charged most of the time. Like the idea of pushing the button and not carrying the gas cans, the onan does use a lot of propane so there is always a trade off

  • Are we talking inverter-Onan, or high rpm Onan?
Where I camp those days, I use 2 gallons of gasoline if I run AC 12hr, or 3 gallons when I have my Honda running 24 hr.
I never run my propane Generac that long, but rough estimate is 5-7 gallons of propane in those periods.
    My Generac is inverter model.

  • Have one and try to never use it......Way too noisy, even after I put a resonator on the exhaust.....I carry a Honda 2000 on the frt rack and use that almost exclusively....The 2000 powers up my 11.5 a/c just fine without having an "east start" capacitor/mechanism.....

If I ever ordered new (bought mine new off the lot) I would never have the Onan......I would delete that and operate off the Honda or similar.....Plus the Onan just sucks the propane......
  • Minus: It is noisy.
    Pretty expensive option

Plus: It has been reliable and easy to maintain.
    Tough to steal
    Incredibly convenient.
Powerful enough to run the AC
In hot weather can be used with the AC to cool down the camper as you drive to your site
No need for another "fuel" container.
With two 7 gallon propane tanks on board, good run time.

As you can see we like it. Our biggest use is AC in summer (AC is noisy too so masks the generator) or charging batteries in winter dry camping. I would do it again.

Of course there are long threads discussing this with mixed views.
  • We have the camp power 2500. We use it when necessary but it is noisy. Unlike markowwes, I don't notice any excess vibration.

I compared it to a neighboring campers 3000 Yamaha. I don't think it was much louder but it had a bit higher frequency sound. A friend put an additional muffler on his and brought the pitch down a bit.

We installed solar this spring so on the last 2 trips only used the generator for a few minutes after stopping to bring the heat down in the camper and to run the microwave.
  • Ya we have one too, pretty noisy plan on switching it out for a Honda 3000 shakes the whole camper when it's running.
  • I have one, try not to use it, noisy and sucks propane.

    I use a Honda 2000i for 99%.
I'll fire up the onan once a month (aka when I remember) but after 2 yrs having it, probably only apx 25hrs or so on it..

It's a back up to the back up.
No idea on the maintenance so standing by...
Don't figure I've gotte there yet, other than maybe oil..

Looking to hear what other comments.

    thanks for the post..
