My 2007 ford diesel car here in Europe just wore out a turbo after 130k miles. Previous owners did 20,000km (12,000 mile) changes with synthetic. I have over 1 million miles across 4 other vehicles with 5,000 mile or less oil change intervals and zero mechanical failures in the engines of those vehicles. The 12,000km oil I dropped when I bought this vehicle was awful and I'm convinced the extended oil changes didn't do my turbo any favors. I'm a firm believer in more vs. less frequent oil changes. Works for me, especially if you keep vehicles for a long period of time.
