Opinions On 2016 Nissan Titan w/5.0 Cummins Diesel?

It appears that the new Nissan Titan will be a heavy half ton and we all know that Cummins makes a good diesel. For folks that don't tow big heavy 5th. wheel trailers with multiple slides, perhaps the new 2016 Nissan Titan with 5.0 V-8 diesel makes a lot of sense! Personally, I've owned (3) V-8 diesels, a 6.2 Banks, 6.5L GM Naturally Aspirated, & 6.5L TD GM 2001 model with 305,000 miles on the odometer. I see this new Titan in a category between the Ram 3.0 LTD & the New Chevy Colorado 2.8LTD Duramax and the big H.D. Ford, Chevy, GM, & Ram 3/4 & 1 Ton Pick Up trucks. To me it makes sense for some people. Bags.
  • Personally I would give the whole platform 1 or 2 years to prove itself - both the truck and the eng. Just too much new technology and design to jump in without any history.
  • Marketing 3/4 ton, or real 3/4 ton with a +8K GVWR ?
  • The big advantage it would have vs my Cummins would be mileage. Potentially anyway. Had it come out a year earlier I'd have checked one out. I like the more robust components and SFA on my Ram though, and I got a good enough deal I decided to just take the plunge. The Titan may be a good compromise for some people in that 8-10k trailer range that's a little beyond half ton comfort zone but not quite heavy duty required. Of course if they price it too high, most would just step up to a true HD truck. It'll be interesting.
  • 2000 pound payload capacity and 12,000 pounds towing capacity may be right in that sweet spot for many camper owners. 330 HP and 555 torque would pull my 32', single slide FW, but that depends on bed length, brakes, transmission cooling, axle weight ratings and other safety factors. The 2000 pound payload capacity may be only for a 2WD, regular cab with a lighter weight gas engine.

Either way I welcome more options for the consumers and more competition for the manufacturers. Should be interesting none the less.
  • At the price point the Titan is sure to come in at, why not just go aheadand get a true 3/4 or 1ton with the diesel and have the real deal?
Sorry, but I just don't see the benefits of a 1/2 ton with a diesel for towing. Think about it. The gas 1/2 tons will pull (properly equipped of course) up to the 9k, maybe even the 10k weight mark. Anything more than that and the 1/2 ton platform becomes unstable and over loaded IMHO. Then consider the added weight of the diesel engine on it's payload ability vs. a gasser. This is where the 3/4 and 1 tons come in.
Maybe for someone who travels a lot and puts tons of miles on one the diesel may reap some benefits in longevity and fuel economy. But towing, I just can't see it.

Solely my opinion and nothing else. With time it's possible it could change!
  • gbopp, thanks for the link, read it and found it very interesting!

jerem0621, from what I read about the Nissan Titan w/Cummins 5.0L V8, it is a heavy duty version of a 1/2 Ton truck, thus blurring the lines between a true 1/2 & 3/4 ton PU truck. I'm pretty sure the Nissan/Cummins would be able to tow most TT's & 5th. Wheels of 32' and under. I currently have 2 38' 5th. Wheel trailers stored behind our commercial building and one is being towed by a new Ford 1 Ton Power Stroke & the other by a 1 Ton Chevy 6.6 Duramax and both owners of these RV's are pleased with their tow vehicles. However, not every RVer wants to tow behemoth RV's like these. One is a Jayco Eagle & the Other an Open Roads. Both of these huge 5th. Wheels would be way to heavy for this new Nissan Titan/Cummins, but 32' long or less may be a good fit! Do you agree? Bags.
  • I am on wait and see mode right now.

I'm thinking that if I need more than a 1/2 ton then I would just go to a 3/4 ton.

    Thanks!

    Jeremiah
  • We'll have to wait and see...I'm going to guess it'll tow pretty good.

Proof is in the eating, so I guess you will soon know how good or otherwise the Nissan will be
