Opnions on slide in or pop up on Toyota Tundra DBL Cab 4x4

If you do which unit and how does it handle. What mod's on the truck suspension etc. I really do not want a 3/4 or 1 ton.:) Thanks.
  • Thanks to all. Going to stick with the Tundra and find the appropriate tc.:)
  • Why look at a Ford ad to learn about Tundras when you have real-world experiences reported right here by some of our fellow TCers?

BTW, we got 18 mpg with our Tundra and Phoenix camper. I don't think that's too shabby.

If you're dissing Tundras because you think they're not made in the USA, Texas was still in the USA last time I checked.
  • Before you even think of buying a want to be truck that gets crappy mileage, watch the you tube video "Ford F-150 v/s Dodge Ram v/s Chevy Silverado v/s Toyota Tundra" by Jose Tello
  • A friend has an Outfitter on a Tundra. It rides well and I don't think she's modded the truck at all, however she's had numerous issues with the TC. At the moment the reefer is out and the electric jacks are "iffy." I believe it's the most basic Outfitter made.

She recently upgraded to a Lance 1055 on a Dodge drw diesel. Probably put the Outfiiter on the market soon. She's going to keep the Tundra, she loves it.
  • I've had an Outfitter Apex 8 on a Toyota Tundra Double Cab 4x4 since 2004. I have air bags, E-rated tires, and Torklift tiedowns. Handles great, accelerates just fine, and brakes just fine. No side to side roll. I'm very happy with the setup and have many miles on it.

If you want to PM me for more details, feel free. Just be forewarned that this thread will likely explode with more comments like daily double's about the Tundra being a half-ton truck.

I'm here to help and give facts about my setup, not armchair comments.

Lots of those guys have 4 wheel and ATC campers on Toyota's and similar.
  • For ten years, we carried a 2004 Phoenix Little Chief popup (1000-lb dry) on a 2003 std-cab, long-bed, 6-cyl, stick-shift, 2-wd Tundra. It drove and handled like a dream--far better than our present rig, a 2002, 10-2 Northern Lite on a 2002 Dodge dually. The only modification to the Tundra was air bags. Because it was a std cab, longbed, the weight distribution was better than yours would be with a similar camper.
  • Be sure you know your truck's payload capacity and stay within the limits. That's not going to allow you very much. Yes, I've seen people with truck campers on Tundras, but...
