The sensor in the DEF is supposed to have chemistry built-in that monitors quality of the DEF. Definition of the sensor is listed on the SAE International web site.
I would have thought poor quality DEF would have triggered a separate code from that sensor. I did notice when I had the CEL that the gauge on the DEF tank dropped fast. My guess is the DEF pump was working overtime trying to increase flow to make up because the NOx sensor was reporting poor conversion. If the DEF is poor quality (water dilution or degraded urea) that makes all kinds of sense.
From this point on I'm going to use Peak Blue DEF only. I saved $5 by purchasing the generic stuff at the farm store but it obviously didn't pay off.
