Parasitic loads - GM trucks & SUV's

I have a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 that I bought new 3 1/2 years ago (now out of warranty). I’m beginning to believe the electrical system was designed by Lucas Electric, the Price of Darkness. (For those who remember classic British cars.)

If the truck sits for a while, I may return to find the battery dead from parasitic loads. Just happened again because we were in Florida for a week, so I’m thinking about it once more.

I had it back to the dealer previously. They found no abnormal loads, but told me I should start it at least once a week long enough to recharge, or else put it on a trickle charger to maintain the battery. I say whoever designed an electrical system which cannot sit for more than a week without draining the battery dead should be taken out and flogged! But I digress.

From searching the internet, discussion on truck forums suggest that this is not an unusual problem with late model GM trucks and SUV’s.

Have any of you come up with a sensible and effective solution for this problem?

I've thought of a couple of things, but I would like to know what others have found to work.

Thanks!

  • Has any aftermarket stuff been added? You could try to isolate which circuits are drawing the most power while the truck is sitting. Obviously some such as ecm etc are always going to be there but it seems you have another problem.

    Just one method or tool
  • My Volvo does that ,it will 'shed loads' progressively to try and save the batteries but after 2 weeks all bets are off.
  • We drive our 05 duramax during the winter months and then it sits in our garage for 6 months. Never had a battery problem until we replaced the radio for a aftermarket radio and cd player. Batteries run down very quickly now but a trickle charger keeps them charged. batteries have been replaced 2 times.

  • Sorry, forgot to mention that the dealer replaced the battery just before the warranty expired, 7 or 8 months ago.

A bunch of stuff on the truck is programmed to stay powered up for a while after the engine is shut down. I've been wondering whether this shut-down doesn't happen sometimes and things continue to draw an abnormal load on an intermittent basis. Intermittent failures would be the toughest kind of problem to track down, I figure.

  • Is it the original battery? If so, it is probably aging out.
  • I have this on mine.... Battery MINDer I see the choices as maintain or disconnect. I picked maintain.

    P.S. I would have a dead battery after ~ 4-6 weeks....
  • Maybe the battery is on it's way out if it hasn't always done this. If it's always done this then you have another issue. I had a 2013 Chevy that sat for over a month at a time and had no problem other than the siri losing it's mind and having to reconnect.
