parrallel batteries for solar setup

I purchased a 100 watt solar kit so I don't have to run my generator so often. It says make sure your batteries are in parallel configuration with pos to pos and neg to neg. My batteries are not currently set up this way. They came from the factory with pos to neg. Is it ok to change the configuration?
  • If you have two 12-volts they have to be in parallel, + to + and - to -. If you have to 6-volts they have to be in series, + to - and + to -. Sounds like you have two 6-volts.
  • If your batteries currently operate your trailer just fine then don't change them. If they are + to - then you have 6v batteries in series.
The solar kit is assuming you have 12v batteries. A bad assumption for a solar kit manual to make. Many people with solar systems use 6v or even 2v batteries.

    YIKES. NO !!!

Given the question that you asked, you might want to find some help when you connect the thing up.
  • I'm not trying to sound mean with this response. But if you don't understand basic DC voltage/battery configurations, then it is highly likely that you can do serious damage to your electrical system by trying to take on a solar installation by yourself.

There are many possible configurations that your batteries may be configured in. We need to know how many batteries you have, and if they are 12volt batteries or 6 volt batteries. If you're configured with two 6V batteries, they must be in series in order to add up to 12V. If you have two 12V batteries, they must be in parallel in order to stay at 12V.
