part three of the broken frame saga.

A nice finish to the over weighted broken axle saga. Not really about the broken framed truck but informative as heck. It's a good read.

Good to know, I was only referring to your comment below (14,500, seemed kinda low for a F450?…):

“Fwiw, my 2010 F450 has a 14,500 GVWR from the factory”

It's because my F450 is a pickup model.

Licensing doesn’t change GVWR…New Ram 4500’s are rated at either 15, 16, or 16.5k, and the 5500’s go to 19.5k, I would expect newer Ford and GM to be similar..

Right, the licensing doesn't equal what it's GVWR is which is why I listed it separately. :D

Anyway, the rating for chassis cabs hasn't changed either for a long time. ;). Here's 2011.

I agree, My 1181 is heavy enough. My wife and I looked at a cirrus this last weekend. The 820 model. I don't remember the numbers off the top of my head but it would be a perfect match for my dually. Fully loaded, water and everything else. I would certainly miss the slide out but having something lighter is starting to appeal to us. As many of you know I talked about looking at TT's and such. They are beautiful and unbelievably cheap compared to a TC and with my dually I could tow a palace. I towed for 25 years and I think I would hate it. I think there certainly is a market for the big ones and there are many super duty trucks out there but the price tag is unbelievable.

“ Fwiw, my 2010 F450 has a 14,500 GVWR from the factory and licensed for 16000 lbs. The newer trucks are not rated higher, so this paragraph is off a bit. I'm under my GVWR, but mine is only 9 1/2 ft double slide. Relative to the larger ones, it's light”.

FWIW (all depending on how one cherry picks the numbers…), my single slide 09 Eagle Cap when fully loaded with groceries for over a weeks journey, lpg (2-30# bottles), 60g fresh water (plus 6g in the water heater), clothing, lawn chairs, hitch extension, solar panels and truck back seat loaded up, hits the scales at well over 14.5k (real world..), this without passengers or trailer…My DRW 3500 4x4 Diesel GVWR is 14k…The only truck mod is the addition of a Curt HD hitch…

I’m not necessarily in disagreement with your statement, however (Unfortunately for the uninitiated..) there’s no standardized way of arriving at camper weights - from seasoned experience, it’s kinda in the eye of the beholder…

Boatycall had a triple slide Eagle Cap on his 2011 F450, or did. I wonder how it's holding up. He was also towing behind it.

But as one Ford F450 owner discovered, a class 4 truck is no panacea when it comes to hauling a heavy camper. Immediately after the rally, this particular owner took his rig, consisting of a 2013 Ford F450 and a 2015 Eagle Cap 1165, to a local CAT Scale to get weighed. He was horrified to learn that his truck was overweight by whopping 2,400 pounds. With a GVWR of only 14,000 pounds and a payload rating of only 5,443 pounds, his truck was woefully overmatched by the 1165. The CAT Scale printout showed 5,160 pounds on the steer axle and 11,280 pounds on the drive axle for a total of 16,440 pounds. Before buying the truck, he was told his F450 could carry “anything” that he wanted and “not to worry.” Obviously, this wasn’t the case with the 1165. When it comes to payload, this illustrates how far today’s trucks have come from trucks that are 10 to 20 year older. Always research before you buy.

  • Northwood ditched the plan you build the triple slide 1163. Their reasoning was "it's so big and heavy, it will have a very limited customer base." They went on to say "Our efforts will be better spent building campers that appeal to more customers and have a higher sales volume." And in conclusion, "building a camper with such limited sale appeal will eat into the production capabilities of the higher selling models."
