Good eye. There are a couple 2x4's just like it further back, as well. They serve 2 purposes. 1. They keep the drawer runners at a fixed width and add some stability to them. 2. Is so my little turn-latch stop could pass over the 1x4 (treated lumber only because it's what I had on hand) and would hit the 2x4 further back as a extension stop, so I couldn't pull it out too far. This was the one part of the design that isn't very good. That little twist stop is too weak and will get torn off quite easily. I will have to somehow redesign that part.
