QUOTE: "Even the Bible says that there is wisdom in the counsel of many."
And, did this book state the GVW of horse and cart? Were no trucks around during for this publication date ... and as many or a few folks believe in what this book says as do the GM, Ford, Dodge books ... just sayin'
You missed the point!!! The OP mentioned 'gospel' and 'many' and I was just helping him along. Otherwise I would have left it out.
Tow ratings are numbers that prospective purchasers like to see. They are as much an 'incentive' to purchase the product as anything else. Until recently there was no standardization on how they were calculated and some manufacturers had some pretty optimistic values. But, if you look carefully at the Ford tow guide there are dedects for gas engines for altitude and for frontal area. Where I live the elevation would reduce the tow rating by between 10 and 14 percent and the frontal area by even more. So, on the surface the ratings can seem high but as we work the math realistically they are lower. And often the max tow rating includes only a driver in a 2x4 regular cab truck. RV dealers often forget all that and just look up the max tow rating and then tell the customer it will tow it. A 10,000 max tow rating can easily be reduced to 8500 pounds in the area I live. So, to the OP, yea it is OK to have the many folks suggest the more truck is better gospel . It all depends on what you plan to do with it. If you can't understand manufacturer's tow or gross vehicle weights, just get the one ton dually with the diesel engine option.
