I've told this story here before, but it's always a good idea to check around your camp for people hiding before you leave. Yes, this happened to me, but even now it's hard to believe. We were truck camping and had parked in a remote place in the Owens valley at a canyon mouth on the White's side. We were getting ready to leave with one of the vehicles when I for some reason started walking off into the sagebrush. I almost stepped on some guy that was laying down in the brush. He got up and took off running into the desert. I still can't believe someone had the determination to sneak up on us and wait for us to leave by hiding in sagebrush like that. Crazy. Never underestimate what people will do to get your stuff.
Not sure about the usefulness of folding the ladder up. Any reasonably athletic person can easily pull themselves up and get on the roof. It's meant more to allow access to any compartments under the ladder rather than as a security measure.
