We used to have a couple of Hillmans which were made by Rootes on England. The same company that built Sunbeam sports cars and was eventually bought by Chrysler. They had a four on the tree with a shift pattern which was the reverse of the North American pattern.
So reverse was forward and down?
Yes. First was forward and up, second was forward and down, third was back and up, fourth was back and down. Reverse was forward and down with the knob on the end of the lever pulled out.
I went to England to visit my grand father and he had one as well. Driving on the left side of the road for the first time while trying to operate that shift lever with my left hand was quite an exercise in concentration. At that time I had a 52 Chev with a three on the tree. The syncros were shot so I had to double clutch it.
