So what's the criteria for poor headlight performance that everyone is using?
I can't really say I've ever had a "bad" set of headlights... My 2003 Chevy was probably the best but everyone kept flashing me all the time even though I was on low beams. The lights were aimed as low as they could be.
Range on my signature truck is lacking but that's mostly because of the 3-4" of rake due to the heavy rear suspension. It's awesome loaded.
My 2015 Chevy's lights are better but not spectacularly better like some are alluding... So, what's the criteria?
I have an 85 Camaro IROCZ that I bought new. I installed Hella headlights in it back then. 160 watt bulbs, and custom wiring with relays. The low beams are far better that most cars high beams, yet they throw a VERY defined low pattern with a sharp cutoff to keep the light out of oncoming traffics eyes... I have never been flashed when on low beams... The High beams are unbelievable.
This is with the best technology that 1985 had to offer. I am sure it can be bested with todays lights. Maybe not so much in clarity as it is hard to imagine them being better, but in lower power requirement for sure. - SouthpawHDExplorer

What I find odd is that 2016 GMC HD trucks come standard with HID lights, but the 2016 Chevys do not. Why not make them standard on all of them?
The 2016 GM half-tons have HIDs on all (or at least most) trucks. The new HIDs are fantastic from what I have read, despite what the article said.
The 2015.5 GMC HD have projector lenses but halogen bulb with a shutter. Are you sure the 2016 isn't the same or did they update to HID? If so that would be great.
I have been told the 2016 GMC HDs all have HID lighting in them. I cannot confirm as I have a Chevy with the projector/halogen set-up. - Bionic_ManExplorer

Have you ever had a GOOD set of headlights? My benchmark is my Porsche Cayman. Everything else I have ever driven pales in comparison. - mkirschNomad IISo what's the criteria for poor headlight performance that everyone is using?

Light intensity aside, millions to the supplier that can manufacture a polycarbonate lenses that doesn't start clouding over a couple a years after you purchase ANY new vehicle.
NOT ANY!!!! For example the polycarbonate lense on our 04 Silverado are as clear as new. And the polycarbonate lenses on my 97 Mercedes E-420 is also clear as new.
But I've seen other makes/models that turn yellow and cloud up after a few years. - ktmrfsExplorer II

How does this happen? The SUV that they build on the same chassis's have killer headlights, enough to set your hair on fire when they pull up behind while you're driving a sedan... Or cause welders blindness if you get hit by high beams on a dark road.
just because they are bright to oncoming traffic or bright from behind you doesn't mean they are providing good illumination to the driver of the vehicle. they can be bright with terrible beam patterns for side illumination or give short distance. - jmckelvyExplorerMy wife's 06 Ford Fusion has much better lights than my o6 RAM as did my previous 01 Chevy 2500HD.
The main problem with the RAM is the difference between hi beam and lo beam. If I adjust so I can see well on low beam the hi beam then points "up" too much. It uses a single bulb so I can't do much but compromise the position.
Sorta becoming a non issue as I am getting old enough that I try to not drive at night. :) - SouthpawHDExplorerWhat I find odd is that 2016 GMC HD trucks come standard with HID lights, but the 2016 Chevys do not. Why not make them standard on all of them?

My 2006 F350 are still clear as new. They have some road rash from following dump trucks and oversize loads but they are still clear. My Vice Prez's 2005 is also still clear with well over 300,000 miles on them.
Must be Florida sun and if the vehicle is parked outside all the time. My '05 Ram I've 'restored' 3 times since owning it, goes right back to fogged within a year. Toyota, which used to be pretty good (wife's 16 year old Camry is just starting to fog) is not as good as once was if the headlights on my daughter's '04 Corolla is any indication. Raging case of 'cataracts'; I've given up on them, even after using the 3M restoration kit, which is probably as good as any on the market.
The two trucks I was referring to , albeit not Florida sun, have been outside since brand new.
