Place for an extra spare tire

Just bought an 18' TT (Pioneer by Fleetwood) and it came with two spares tires. One is mounted on the rear bumper and is very secure. I was wondering if anyone has mounted a spare under the battery and propane tanks at the front. Would it be hanging too low? Thanks for any help.

  • If I was going to choose an alternative location to mount a spare on my 18' Pioneer, it would probably be underneath, above the axles. There's plenty of room in that area and it would affect loading minimally. It would be pretty simple to reinforce the rear bumper area for a second one too. All the framing is readily available to weld/bolt to.

The TT does have good tires on it. The previous owner provide us with two spares and his explanation for two was that since the tires on the unit were two on each side (one behind the other) if you ran over something and damaged the first tire it would be possible for the second tire to hit the same object and be damaged. Probably not that likely, but better safe than sorry!

That's an old, tired argument. By that same logic, your TV tires would hit the object first, and then you'd need a total of 4 spares. Besides, you can limp down the road by replacing just one tire and affixing the other axle in an "up" position...just in case you had 2 tires blow at the same time.

But to answer your question, why not just mount it the bumper like the other one? You can either buy another mount or fab up something similar. Another option (if you don't have a tire cover or don't care about the cover) is to run some longer bolts through the spare tire bolt holes and attach the extra spare to it, kinda double-decker style.
  • at the end of this past summer I had good tires on my 5er but ran over something and the rear tire on the trailer blew and the shrapnel from the tire broke off the stem on the front tire and there I was on the side of the road with 2 tires down. Fortunately I was only 2 miles from home so I left the trailer on the side of the road and went home and picked up 2 of the 4 extra wheels and tires I had there. I now have 2 spares and carry one in the back of the truck but shortly plan to put a spare tire carrier under the trailer with the 2nd spare. BAL makes a under frame spare tire carrier that bolts up to the frame, I just need to take the time to get some measurements and order it then install.

  • Why not just put some good tires on and eliminate the need for 2 spares. You don't carry 2 spares for your truck or car do you?

  • Mine is mounted under the propane tanks/battery area. I have never had to take it off but it doesn't look to be that difficult if I had to get to it.
