OP is a man after my own heart. We pulled our 26' TT from Alabama to Utah with a Tundra 2 summers ago, and for the NM and Utah legs I actually zoomed in on mapquest and found service stations about where I would need gas. I actually tried to locate TWO stations at each point. Sure enough, many times we would get to that point and one of the two stations would be closed/abandoned. In fact we saw A LOT of abandoned businesses and even towns in Utah.
We pulled the trailer down Scenic 95 from Blanding to Hanksville and it was 142 miles between gas stations, and I don't think we saw 6 cars in that stretch. However, it was the most spectacular drive of the trip. I knew the gas situation in advance and we went 5 miles out of our way to Blanding to top off the tank before taking this stretch.
We also strapped down two 5 gallon jerry cans in the front of the bed as insurance since we only have a 26 gallon tank. Never used them, but felt much better having them.
This trip for us was 4,500 miles, 27 days, and through 9 states. Utah and the NW corner of New Mexico were the only places where we would have had problems finding gas at the right times. If we ever get to make that dream trip to Yellowstone, I have management approval to install a 30 gallon transfer tank in the bed.
I know most of you will view this as OCD, but it sure enabled me to enjoy the trip more.
Let's put the "fun" back in dysfunctional!
