Planning trip through NM and AZ any cool points of interest?

Wife and I are planning a trip from the San Antonio area through New Mexico and Arizona. Our main stopping points are Phoenix, Sedona and Albuquerque with 4 nights n each of these areas before moving on. We plan on hitting the Grand Canyon and visiting friends in Phoenix but pretty much open to where the wind blows us in between.
Anyone have suggestions on must see stuff in any of these areas? We just kind of plan on leaving our base camp each day and driving a different direction to see what we find with no real plans but exploring and stopping where the mood strikes.

  • I would take the time to drive off of I-10 and visit Tombstone. If you want a really nice park near there, use Tombstone Territories RV Park. And if you visit there, call ahead and get reservations to tour Karchner Caverns.

  • Yes you can take a trailer to Chaco Canyon. Nice NPS campground. But it is 19 miles of dirt road and you need to go slow.
  • While in the Albuquerque area, consider the Coronado Campground, by the Town of Bernallilo - just north. We really enjoyed it while friends that stayed in the other options in the same area were not impressed with their accommodations. Here's a blog post with some photos: Coronado Campground, Overlooking the Rio Grande

In the area, we enjoyed hiking at Tent Rocks and exploring the culture and art. The Coronado Historic Site, across from the campground was well worth a bit of time exploring and learning.

After Coronado, we ventured up to Chaco Canyon Historic Park which was a highlight of our few months in the 4 corners area. It's a rough road to get in, but we took it slow with our 4 Runner and Lance 1685 20' trailer and made it with no problem. There's a gas station right at the corner where you turn off for dirt/rock rutted road, so no worries about running out of gas. Is it Possible To Take A Travel Trailer to Chaco Canyon?

So much to see and do. ENJOY!
  • Swing thru Tucson and go to Old Tucson....if you liked old westerns, you'll like Old Tucson
  • On the way to Sedona on I-40 stop at Meteor City and take the tour. Also on I-40 is Walnut Canyon (Native American ruins). Slide Rock State Park is nice. The hike around Bell Rock in Sedona is nice also. For Restaurants, go to the Coffee Pot (have 101 Omelets). Also Javelina Cantina has very good Mexican Food.
