I have had 4 truck campers over 30+ years, largest was 8.5'. I didn't want any overhang in the back, I wanted to park pretty much anywhere the truck could park. I started with a popup went to a hard side then 2 more popups. Whoever said it is right, what your wife likes and will accept is what to buy. My wife and I like the popups better because when all opened up they were so bright and airy, Ours had screens on all 4 sides so any breeze would keep us comfortable accept in extreme heat. We had a 10 speed MaxxFan in the last one and it was the best for keeping things cool and it was easy to drop the top, just put it on exhaust full speed and drop the top, all the canvas sucked in. Our setup on the popups were around 7.5' tall so we could go most everywhere but parking garages. Popups are noisier to sleep in and cooler in cold weather and warm weather without AC, we used ours from May through October only. Furnace was needed sometimes in October.
All 4 of our truck campers had porta-potties and usable with the top down on popups. You could get to the frig but the stove required the top to be put up.
Our last setup was my favorite, light camper on an 8' f250 diesel, plenty of power in all conditions, you hardly notice the camper was on. Left the camper on unless I need the truck bed. I didn't even leave the jacks on, they always seemed in the way.
We switched to a B camper last Summer because my wife has bad knees and was having trouble getting in the over cab bunk. We kept with a low profile (8.5') and 19' B for many of the reasons we picked the small slide in campers.
