Portable ice maker, anyone have one of these?

Insignia™ - 26-Lb. Portable Ice Maker

I have a $100 bestbuy gift card I have to use so naturally this is good fit but at the same time I'm not going to get it if its garbage.

I never had a portable ice maker and wanted to also know how long it would take for it to put out enough ice to keep a 30 pack of beer cold in a 48 quart cooler. I know temperature would make a difference outside but roughly.

  • I have had one for 6 years in the camper. Cannot remember the brand, but is heavier than the newer ones on the market. Do know I paid only 79.00 at Target just before Christmas.

  • We have a Dometic small. It is makes more then enough for the two of us and our drinking habits. We end up putting a lot in the freezer the night before we have to leave a campsite, so we will have ice the following day. We love it!

I always wanted to get one... This is first thing I make a trip back to town for - "Honey go get some ice" she says... "Yes dear"

Even when we are way back back in the woods somewhere...

  • We have had one similar(makes the same cubes) for over 10 years now, and its been worth every penny. Always have plenty of ice. The only downside for all of these is that they aren't a freezer too, so as we make ice, we bag it up, and throw it in the deep freeze for use the next day.

You can buy this Igloo unit at Sam's Club for $89.

    I don't think everyone has a Sam's Club membership, I know I don't.
  • Ask Buford, he has one, works off his solar array. Uline I think is the type. Makes more ice than we all can drink, filtered too off the water tanks.
  • We bought a Dometic (large) several years ago and it works great. Drops a tray of ice every 10 minutes. We use bottled water to keep it clear of hard water deposits. Ice is 'wet' and keep a plastic bowl in freezer to harden. A 48 qt ice chest takes about 2 hours if you empty the ice maker every time it is full which is about 2 cycles and the drinks are pre chilled (extreme ice chest).
  • I have one similar to that made by igloo. Cost about the same amount. I used it all during the summer this year. It worked great. I don't think I could go without one.
