portable ice maker

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up who might be in the market for a portable ice maker. Cabela's has one on sale for $229 with free shipping and also get a free snow cone machine (my son will go bananas over that). I really liked this one because it uses a water jug (2 or 5 gallon) for the water to make ice and it also has a chilled water dispenser for a cold glass of water. It also recycles the melted ice to make new ice.

  • LOVE OUR ICE MACHINE!! I ordered from ebay and it was around $148 with free shipping. Seems like most of them look alike, so it's whatever brand. If it's hot outside, the ice maker will not work effectively....needs to come indoors if it's very toasty...the unit is not insulated for outside heat. Found that out after the fact, but wouldn't have mattered since it's perfect for us. It takes a bit of counter space that I hated losing, but could relocate it if I needed to. Ours is the simple 1 gallon of water and turn it on. No frills, just ice. And plenty of it.
  • This is the link for the ice machine that I was referring to:

  • You can find them all over the place for far less than that. I have seen them for under a hundred dollars in several stores.
  • I didn't get it from Cabela', but I have one that looks exactly like it. It works great inside a climate controlled room. Not sure how it would work out sitting outside in 90 degree weather. Probably OK, but the ice in the bin would melt faster. It only holds about a gallon of water, which is more than enough to fill the ice bin a few times.
