Portable Ice Maker

My wife & I looked at a small portable electric Ice makers at local camping store. Has anyone used one ? Would you buy one again ?

  • We have one for home use. The thing I don't like is the ice is wet and when you put it in the freezer, you get a solid block that you have to break apart.
  • Love them. Just be aware they make soft ice. To be really useful the ice needs to harden in a real freezer.
  • Last year I was i Home Depot and saw a Magic Chef ice-maker on sale for $93. I decided to purchase it and brought it home. My DW said I wasted my money. Well we took it on our next trip and spent 10 day in Ocean City MD. The second day into the trip my DW said it was the best thing we ever purchased for our TT. We use our TT about 50 nights per year and one of the first things we turn on is the ice-maker. The first ice cubes are ready in about 15 minutes and just keeps making ice nonstop.
  • Love ours. Small cubes even on the largest size, but it makes them pretty quick and keeps them cold enough that they don't melt. Good for mixing with gin.
  • They are all about the same. Think they are like car batteries...maybe 3 mfgs. just branded differently. No need to spend a lot of money. Ours works great until the outside temp gets over 90. Then we bring it inside and it pumps out ice very quickly. Now, we usually just keep it inside on the counter and it will make enough ice to keep a good ice chest going for quite a while.

Yes and yes. We just got one and I can't figure out why I didn't buy one before . Works great and know more runs to town for ice.
  • We use one all the time while camping, but don't get it at camping store they are way overpriced. You can get a lot of places for $100.
  • I'm using ours right now. It's made by Igloo. We use it both at home and on the road in the RV. It works well, only cost about $125, and we would buy it again.

I sure wish I had one that I could run from my batteries... That's always the first we run out when camping off the power grid and have to make a couple of ice runs back to town somewhere... The five day ice chests really work good but you still run out of ice it seems..
