This is where I completely disagree with that article. (And it's not because I go over my sticker rating)
A manufacture adds a simple overload spring, higher capacity tires and then bumps up payload 100-2000 lbs or more....tells me the other parts of the truck are the same and well up to that task of the higher rated truck....if you address those areas. My truck is rated at 9000 lbs, same era 3500 DRW is dated at 12,200 lbs. same axles, brakes, frame....ram added overloads and two more tires on the rear.
I'm comfortable being maxed to 12k on my truck after tires and suspension was addressed. YMMV. I started with the wrong truck but made it work after research led me to this reality. I'd start with a on ton DRW next time if I knew I'd end up with a TC and large boat.
