Well, we just returned from our inaugural trip with our Dodge Cummins 5.9L/Lance 825 TC! I now have my mileage results and I've gotta admit, I'm pleased.
27+ Empty Truck Highway
20+ Empty Truck City
16+ Loaded Truck/Camper, Average Highway/City
We ended up traveling from CA> OK> MO> SD> and back to CA in 11 days. Roughly 4,412 miles round trip. Next trip will be a little shorter in length! :) We drank 262 gallons of diesel ($1,200!) and our mileage averaged 16.8 mpg. We had the TC loaded: 2 Adults, 2 Labs and stayed no more than 1/2 full on all of our tanks. That being said I was still about 500 pounds over the Dodge GVWR.
P.S. Of course, I made a huge list of "personalizations" to do on the Lance....first thing being a place to hang my keys at night!
Those earlier Cummins where the best engines. Pif Paf, air and fuel, this is all they need to get going, nothing sofisticated like my 6.0 Ford Diesel. They have mechanical injectors, very simple turbo and easy to work on. I heard the new Dodge are just the same as any other Diesel now, depending on the year, some are worst.
My son's truck is a 2001, 12 valves not modified at all. 18 MPG loaded with camper was on highway and when he uses it as a daily runner for short highway / small town he gets around 18 as well. Empty on highway he gets 21 to 22 MPG. And this thing start like a gasser, it was minus 18F yesterday, unpluged and it started right up, two turns of the engine and it was running.
